Life drawing!

Here is some of my life drawing work!

BA2 - Facial Topology

The best way to describe facial topology is that it is mapping out the face with its key features and structures by using loops around them.  They are also always squares, triangles are not used.

Below are some bad examples of loops in facial topology.

BA2 - Contextual Studies

This is just how im going to set out my 1000 word essay, just so i know what im writing!

Intro = Say what personaly interests me as a future job and why and state the jobs im interested in

Main = Talk about each job
Talk about Triple A and Indie studios and the difference
Talk about job requirements from one studio from each

Conclusion = Summaries what i have found out and say what i would like to do in the future.

BA2 - Contextual Studies

For contextual studies and our 1000 word essay it's about roles in the industry and what we want to do/become in the future.  The two roles i have looked into are Concepts Artists and Artists.

Concept Artists

*Are specialised and found more in larger companies
*Can specialise in creating characters, creatures/animals, environments
*Have to acheive maximum effect with minmum complexity
*Have to ensure the designs fit with the general look of the game
*Have to consider colours and colour schemes used to maintain a balance of coloyr throughout the design

Artists

*broad range and found more in smaller companies
*needs to be able to do a rage of things:
-characters
-animals/creatures
-environments
-model
-lighting
-textures
-effects

*Have to acheive maximum effect with minmum complexity
*Have to ensure the designs fit with the general look of the game
*Have to consider colours and colour schemes used to maintain a balance of coloyr throughout the design

Reading ImagineFX magazine issue 79, theres an article interviewing the art team who did Batman: Arkham City (Rocksteady) about their work and how to be a concept artists and points to keep in mind.

*Try drawing/painting different subjects and don't limit yourself to one genre
*Don't be afraid of painting software
*Keep your portfolio to 20-30 pieces
*Be ready and willing to move to different parts of the world
*Look at modern fashion/runway/catwalks for inspiration for designs
*Practice drawing realistic interiors
*Draw everything around you
*Don't just be an artist, be a designer.

"A concept artist has to consider how a character will be used in-game, developing function and aesthetic in one go."

A concept artist follows this role and routine:

Visualization -> Production Art -> Live Changes -> Marketing

Total of 2 and a half hours and i have now done the ear, not too bad i think!  total time now of about 11 hours.

BA2 - 9 HOURS

I have been working on the mouth a bit and the chin but primarily the ears.  Need to rework the chin, mouth is getting there and the ear is coming along nicely.  Today i think i will aim for about 6 hours of work.  So far 1 and a half done!

BA2 - BETTER

Just some blabber

Using Sculptress is good and i do enjoy it alot.  But because most people are using Mudbox and that has a base head to work from, everyone seems to be ahead of me  and im finding it really hard to create something that looks exactly like Aubs (the person im basing my sculpture on).  In 6 hours i have created and plotted out most features and just tidying the nose and face shape up. Whilst my friend has done the face, hair and nose and just needs to work on the eyes and mouth aswell as cleaning up and altering parts.  But from a round blob to create a head with no base im quite happy with myself.  I will work hard to try and get the sculpture looking okay.  Well i guess we will see! :) Also, check out my other blog elieharrisonart.blogspot.com which has other bits of art there of mine :)

BA2 - 6 HOURS

yeahh did this at 2am then decided to quit.  Not because my laptop was crying but rather my body was.  Too many late nights and waking up eary is not a good thing. So far its okay.   I messed up the nose now and the lump on his head is going to be his hair.  Face shape is better i think.

BA2 - PRACTICE

Here is worm boy, my first unfinished play/creation using Sculptress. i like him.

BA2 - 5 HOURS

5 hours in total of work :)! its getting there! the face shape is okay and i think i have the nose down. the mouth is a NIGHTMARE.  currently working on the eyes. the lump on his head is where his hair will be.  Nothing is finished yet need to add detail, clean up etc.

Projcet 3 - YEAH getting there.

Because i have been unable to download Mudbox to my laptop, i have downloaded Sculptris and thats going okay! It's not as good as mudbox and it hasnt got a head base but thats fine! My poor laptop is barely coping! here is about 3 hours worth of work so far ( i know alot needs working on but i have got the head shape and nose about right).  Im having fun although its challenging and my laptop is crying and being slow haha!

Our task is to create either a celebrity or one of our peers as a digital bust.  I chose to do my friend Aubs!

Projcet 3 - TROUBLE

So far I'm having trouble using Maya and Mubdox.  I'm finding Maya hard to use and frustrating to work with; animation really isn't  what I'm made for.  The first time i used it i hade a rage quit as it wouldnt key frame everything that I did.  Whilst with Mudbox my laptop cant support it and it's frustrating as I love to work late at night and the only time I can work on it is in uni hours.  Although, Mudbox is allot easier to work with and I got the hang of it in 10 minutes.  Although, for the life of me I can not remember how to find the mirror tool!

My bouncy ball animation is not amazing but I guess it will do.  I think I need to show more of the squash and stretch principle when the ball falls down to hit the ground by stretching it out a bit.  But I have already forgotten how to do most things on Maya. Heaven knows how I'm going to finish the walk, run and jump cycles.
My first test piece for Mudbox is okay, but the nose and mouth i found very hard to do.  I found it fun to play about and experiment with different forms and shapes of the head and what was possible to create.

Still getting used to technology and I really don't like it but I'm giving it a shot.  I don't think I'll do as well as last term and then I only did okay.  I hope next term it wont be as heavy technology based!
